Backups that ransomware can't touch
Modern ransomware goes after your backups first, because a business that can restore doesn't pay. We keep copies of your data that can't be changed or deleted by anyone, including an attacker holding the keys, and we prove they restore.
- Veeam Cloud and Service Provider
- Immutable copies
- Offsite copy in the UK
- Recovery tested twice a year
Why ordinary backups fail
Most businesses that lose data did have a backup. It just didn't work when it mattered. The usual reasons:
It was encrypted too
A backup drive or server on the same network is reachable by the same ransomware. Attackers look for backups deliberately and destroy them before they encrypt anything else.
It quietly stopped
A full disk, an expired password or a moved folder, and the backup has been failing for months. Nobody checked the emails, if there were any.
Nobody had tried restoring
The files were there, but restoring a whole server took days nobody had planned for, or a vital system had never been included.
How our backup works
You may have heard of the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, one of them offsite. It's a good start, but it was written before ransomware went after backups. We go further.
-
A fast local copy
Backups are taken with Veeam and kept close by, so restoring a file or a whole machine is quick.
-
A hardened, immutable copy
A copy goes to a locked-down Linux backup repository where data is immutable: once written, it can't be altered or deleted until its retention period ends.
-
An immutable copy offsite
Another copy goes to Wasabi cloud storage in the UK with Object Lock switched on. It survives a fire, a flood or a full network compromise.
-
Zero errors, proved
Every job is monitored and failures are picked up by us, not discovered by you. Twice a year we run a full recovery test.
What immutable actually means
Immutable storage refuses any change or deletion for a set period. Not "asks for a password", refuses. That matters because attackers usually get in using real, stolen credentials, often an administrator's. With an ordinary backup, that's enough to delete everything. With immutable storage, it isn't. The data stays put until the retention period has run out, whoever asks.
A simple test: if your IT provider logged in with full admin rights, could they delete last week's backup? If the answer is yes, so could an attacker who stole those rights.
Disaster recovery, not just backup
Backup is having a copy. Disaster recovery is knowing how long it takes to be working again, and having done it before. Every customer gets:
- A written recovery plan: what gets restored first, where to, and who does what
- Agreed recovery targets, so you know in advance how much data and time a disaster would cost
- A full recovery test twice a year, with the results written up for you
- Alerts on every failed or missed backup, handled by us
The tests are where the value is. Every one finds something worth fixing, and it's far better to find it on a quiet Tuesday than in the middle of an incident.
Questions
Doesn't Microsoft back up our Microsoft 365 data?
Microsoft keeps the service running, but it isn't a backup of your data in the way most people assume. Deleted items and old versions are only kept for limited periods, and if an attacker or a disgruntled leaver deletes things, Microsoft won't restore them for you months later. A separate backup covers that gap.
Where is our data stored?
In the UK. The offsite immutable copy is held in Wasabi's UK cloud storage, and the backups are encrypted.
How quickly can you restore?
A file or folder usually takes minutes. A full server depends on its size and what's affected, which is exactly what the recovery plan and twice-yearly tests establish, so you'll know the number before you ever need it.
We already have a backup. Can you check it?
Yes, and it's a good place to start. We'll tell you what's covered, what isn't, whether it would survive ransomware and when it was last proved to restore.
How much does it cost?
It depends on how much data you have and what needs protecting, so we quote after a look at your setup. Backup sits alongside our managed IT support, where the monitoring and testing are already part of the service.
Local, and on site when it matters
We're based in Mumbles and come on site across South Wales, from Carmarthen and Llanelli to Neath, Port Talbot and Bridgend. See IT support in Swansea or all the areas we cover.
When did you last restore from your backup?
If the answer is "never" or "not sure", let's find out whether it works before you need it to.
